Muscle tension

Refers to a state in which muscles remain partially contracted for an extended period. This can occur either as a natural response to stress, overuse, or injury, or due to an underlying medical condition. Unlike a spasm or cramp (which are sudden and intense), muscle tension is typically more chronic and subtle, but still uncomfortable.

Common causes of muscle tension:

  • Stress or anxiety (a very common cause, especially in the neck, shoulders, and back)

  • Poor posture

  • Overuse or repetitive movements

  • Physical inactivity

  • Muscle strain or injury

Symptoms

  • A feeling of tightness or stiffness in the muscles

  • Mild to moderate pain or discomfort

  • Fatigue in the affected muscle area

  • Limited range of motion

  • Sometimes tension headaches (especially from neck and shoulder tension)
